NGC 1909-S VDB Lincoln Wheat Cent F-15 Brown
1909-S (San Francisco) VDB Lincoln Wheat cent graded at F-15 Brown (fine 15 out of a possible 70, brown indicates that the original reddish copper color has faded to the more commonly seen brown) and encapsulated in hard acrylic by Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC). The VDB is the designer’s initials. This is one of the rarest pennies ever minted, and can fetch a very high price when sold. This coin has wear and discoloration common of this grade. The coin can be seen in greater detail in the enlarged pictures attached.
The Lincoln Wheat cent was designed by Victor D Brenner, and was introduced in 1909 for the 100th Anniversary of Lincoln’s birth. The front, or obverse, of the coin features President Abraham Lincoln. The back, or reverse, of the coin features the words “ONE CENT” and “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” surrounded on both sides by ears of wheat. The critical VDB mark is located at the very bottom of the reverse by the rim. This design ran from 1909-1958. It was replaced by the Lincoln Memorial cent in 1959.
Coin weight: 3.11g
Composition: .950 copper, .050 tin & zinc
